Joe Wicks films videos to help Sheffield children prepare for surgery
Five short videos filmed at Sheffield Children’s aim to help patients aged eight to 16 build healthier habits before an operation.
Young patients awaiting operations are being offered help to build healthier routines at home through a new video project involving Joe Wicks and Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.
Wicks, known as The Body Coach, recorded five short films at the hospital, The Star reports. Designed for eight to 16-year-olds, they pair exercises with advice on food, sleep, managing stress and wider wellbeing.
The aim is to help families prepare for an operation through lifestyle changes that may also support recovery.
Sheffield Children’s clinical teams worked with Wicks on the project alongside national partners, including the Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Centre for Perioperative Care.
Healthy habits before an operation
Dr Zoë Burton, consultant anaesthetist at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, said the hospital’s clinics already help families develop healthy routines ahead of surgery, with the intention that those habits continue afterwards.
She said being more active and spending less time sitting could benefit children’s physical and mental health, particularly for those living with excess weight. She hoped the films would encourage families to take manageable steps towards better health.
Wicks said the project was about helping children feel better prepared, through changes such as moving more, building confidence and making healthier choices where possible.
During his visit, he spoke to children and families on the wards about keeping active in hospital. He also led a 10-minute workout involving patients, relatives and hospital colleagues.
Dr Claire Shannon, president of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, said the videos offered practical support intended to improve wellbeing before surgery, build confidence and help recovery.
