Sheffield reaches City of Culture final with at least £125,000 for bid
Sheffield is one of four City of Culture finalists, securing at least £125,000 for its bid, with £10 million earmarked for the winner.
Sheffield has reached the four-city shortlist for the City of Culture title, putting it in contention for £10 million for the eventual winner.
The city will receive at least £125,000 to develop its bid, according to The Star. Its rivals are Blackpool, Milton Keynes and Wrexham.
Elizabeth Newman, artistic director of Sheffield Theatres, welcomed the shortlisting, describing it as a ‘brilliant day for Sheffield’. She said the title would offer an opportunity to “celebrate all that we are and all that we want to be”.
The bid brings together theatre, museums, galleries, music, visual art, circus and activities involving public participation. Organisations throughout Sheffield have helped develop programme ideas, including groups beyond its cultural venues.
Newman said that collaboration had shaped plans for celebrations if Sheffield won. She described culture as a way to involve residents and visitors, bring people together and help them feel part of the city.
She also pointed to the range of work already taking place, from year-round activities to events staged for a single moment. Alongside the theatres, she highlighted museums, galleries and companies producing work across Sheffield.
Newman said Sheffield already deserved recognition as a City of Culture and that winning “would be the icing on the cake”.
