Sheffield Wednesday hold Blackpool to 1-1 draw after Swinkels red card
Dave Challinor watched from the stands as Sheffield Wednesday earned a point against Blackpool despite Sil Swinkels' first-half dismissal.
Sheffield Wednesday secured a point at Hillsborough against Blackpool despite spending more than half the match a player short, with incoming manager Dave Challinor watching a 1-1 draw from the stands.
Sil Swinkels received a straight red card five minutes before half-time for bringing down Tom Bloxham as the Blackpool forward threatened to break through on goal, Sky Sports reports. Wednesday were leading through Davis Keillor-Dunn, but substitute Jerry Yates levelled in the 81st minute.
Challinor had been named as Henrik Pedersen’s replacement on the morning of the fixture. His new side took the lead after 25 minutes when Keillor-Dunn intercepted a wayward pass near the centre circle. He advanced without a challenge and beat Bailey Peacock-Farrell with a low finish inside the goalkeeper’s right-hand post.
Even after Swinkels’ dismissal, Wednesday had opportunities to extend their advantage. Peacock-Farrell saved a long-range attempt from Keillor-Dunn before Blackpool eventually drew level.
Yates met Albie Morgan’s cross and poked his finish beyond Ashley Maynard-Brewer. Both the scorer and Peacock-Farrell previously spent time on loan at Wednesday.
Mason Burstow then threatened to put the hosts back ahead with a chip from distance, but Peacock-Farrell clawed the effort away to keep the scores level.
