Sheffield United beat Wrexham 1-0 at Bramall Lane on Friday 30 October, moving to within a point of the League top eight ahead of the weekend fixtures.

Ben Brereton Diaz scored the only goal from close range, his first of the season. It was United’s third win in their last five games, following earlier victories over Lincoln and Bristol City, according to The Star.

Jordan Ayew led the line and received a standing ovation from supporters, having played a part in the goal. Romelle Donovan was back in the starting line-up and also impressed.

Wilder wants consistency

United set the tone in the first half hour, a clear contrast to their slow start in the 1-1 home draw with Derby County on the preceding Saturday. Wrexham’s only shot on target was a header in injury time, which goalkeeper Michael Cooper held easily.

Blades manager Chris Wilder said his side had yet to deliver a full-match display this season. “We needed to put a 95, 96 minute performance together because we haven’t all season, really,” he said. “We’ve been good in parts and not so good in parts and finding that consistency is key for us.”

Wilder was critical of his team’s use of the ball in certain spells of the second half. He also felt his side should have had a penalty after Harrison Burrows went down following a challenge from behind by Wrexham’s Dom Hyam. Referee David Webb waved away the appeals.

“But a clean sheet at home and a 1-0 victory,” Wilder said. “Hopefully we can kick on from tonight’s performance.”
