Sheffield Wednesday will be without defender Di’Shon Bernard for their League One derby away to Doncaster Rovers on Saturday 24 October, though manager Henrik Pedersen expects him to resume training the following week.

Pedersen told the Yorkshire Post that Bernard had taken a kick to the opposite knee from the one involved in his previous injury. He said the setback was unrelated to that injury or to the demands of training and matches.

Bernard was forced off early in the defeat at Notts County on Tuesday 20 October. It was only his third appearance since coming back from a 15-month absence, having returned against Huddersfield Town.

Pedersen said the incident had worried players, staff and supporters, but described the subsequent assessment as positive. A return to training remains an expectation rather than a certainty.

Suspensions add to Wednesday’s absences

Callum Slattery and Jamal Lowe are also unavailable through suspension for the Doncaster match. Lowe begins a three-match ban.

Elsewhere in the squad, Joe Lumley has yet to resume work on the training pitch, while Sil Swinkels has completed a full week of training. Ricardo Santos is starting back gradually, with Pedersen saying he still needs time.

Jordi Liongola is working at full intensity on the pitch and joining some exercises. Pedersen also reported progress for Louie Barry, who has been doing finishing work.

George Brown has taken part in one session during the week, although Pedersen said he remained at a very early stage in terms of playing matches. Max Lowe has also trained.
